William Yates was born in Rivington in 18061808. He was baptised on 7 October 1810 at St Peters, Bolton Le MoorsApril 1808 at the Deane Parish Church in Rumworth. He is either the second son and third child of James Yates and Ann Heyes OR the eldest and second son of William Yates and Betty ??Parkinson.

On April 14 1834 he married Jane Roscoe /wiki/spaces/HFHW/pages/6586468 at St Peters, Bolton Le Moors. Jane was the daughter of Peter Roscoe and Jane Booth. Jane was born in Horwich
