William Yates was born in Rivington in 1808. He was baptised on 7 April 1808 at the Deane Parish Church in Rumworth. He is the second child and second son of William Yates and Betty Parkinson.

On April 14 1834 he married /wiki/spaces/HFHW/pages/6586468 at St Peters, Bolton Le Moors. Jane was the daughter of Peter Roscoe and Jane Booth. Jane was born in Horwich

Between 1834 and 1851 William and Jane had seven children (two boys and five girls)

It appears that the family lived in Rivington after their marriage and moved to Turston for a while around 1838. From the time of the 1841 census onwards the family lived in and around Bolton where William worked as a Blacksmith

  • 1841 Census - the family were living at Mortfield in Halliwell, Bolton (his nephew Henry was living with them)
  • 1851 Census - the family were living at 15 Back Chorley St (between Halliwell and Bolton town centre)
    • William is working as a Blacksmith and Jane is a cotton ruler.
    • Alice is a cotton doubler, Ann a house servant
  • 1861 Census - the family was living at 15 Cannon St, Great Bolton 
    • Jane's uncle ??? Roscoe visiting with them (he is noted as a seller of milk)
    • All the girls are working in the cotton industry as a weaver or a carder
  • 1871 William and Jane were living at 56 Pikes Lane near Heaton
    • William is noted as being out of employ and Jane is a char woman
    • David, Elizabeth and Esther are both living at home, and Esther has a child - Maria
    • Elizabeth is working as a Cotton Weaver and David is a Wheelwright

The exact date of Williams death is unknown, however it is recorded in the England BMD Death Index for Mar 1872 in Bolton.
