John Cairns (abt 1777 - 

John Cairns was born abt 1777 in Tillicoultry, Clackmannan. We have been unable to identify baptismal or death records for John, however we know from marriage records that is residing in Tillicoultry at the time of his first marriage. Whilst we have been unable to identify his parents based on the birth records of his children, they are most likely James Cairns and Mary 

John married Janet Morison via banns in January 1802, banns were announced in Tillicoultry on 29 January 1802 and in Blackford on 31 January 1802. Janet is from Blackford, Perth and it has not yet been possible to identify a birth record for her, however she was most likely born around 1780.

John and Janet had three children (2 daughters and 1 son), including:

  • Janet Cairns - born 1802
  • Mary Cairns - born 1804
  • James Cairns - born 1806 ; married Janet Paterson in 1830 and Mary Gray in 1838 ; died 1877

Whilst it is has not been possible to identify death records for Janet Morrison or additional marriage records, the following three children are noted as having a different mother Margaret Morison, including:

  • Margaret Cairns - born 1809 ; died 1862
  • Jean Cairns - born 1811
  • John Cairns - born 1814 ; died 1827

The family lived in Westertown where John was working as a wright.

We know that John died prior to 1862 - based on his daughter Margaret's death certificate. There is a death recorded for a John Cairns in Westertown in March 26 1817, being interred in the New Churchyard


There is also a Janet cairns of Westertown interred in the Old Church yard in February 8 1812.
