James McFarlane (1805 - 1871)

James McFarlane was born in 1805 in Dull Perthshire. He was the fifth child and the fifth son of John McFarlane and Ann Stewart.

There is little known about the family, however on James death certificate his father is noted as being a labourer. 

James married Margaret Chisholm in on March 27 1836 at Fortevoit, Perthshire, Scotland ... Margaret was the first daughter and eldest child of Roderick Chisholm and Elizabeth McPherson

James and Margaret spent the early part of their marriage in Dundee Angus, before moving to Auchterarder

1851 census

The family were living in Auchterarder, Perthshire and James 45 is noted as being a plasterer. He is living with his wife margaret and five of their sons (James 14 ; Elizabeth 12 ; Ann ; 7 ; Donald / Daniel 5  ;  George - 2 - Scholar ;  Roderick - 6 months


1861 census

The family were living in Auchterarder, Perthshire and James 56 is noted as being a plasterer. He is living with his wife margaret and five of their sones (James 24 - Plasterer ; Donald / Daniel 15 - Plasterer ;  George - 12 - Scholar ;  Roderick - 10 ; John - 7

The family were living on Main St in Auchterarder, Perthshire and James at 66 is noted as being plasterer with his wife Margaret and their 3 youngest sones Daniel 25 (Post Messenger) ; George E 22 (Carter) ; John 17 (Post Boy)

August 1871

James dies in Auchterarder - death certified by son... Daniel


1876

Daniel and his brother John emigrate to Australia aboard the Roxburgshire ; arriving in Qld on 20 Jun 1876 ; John was a Remittance immigrant, whilst Daniel travelled in Steerage.

1881 Census

Margaret is living at the Work house in Auchterarder where she is noted as being a pauper.

1884

Margaret dies whilst living at poor house


Daniel Mcfarlane married Priscilla Affleck in Sydney, New South Wales, on 20 February 1880 when he was 33 years old.

McFARLANE-AFFLECK.-February 20, 1880, at Sydney, by the Rev. Thomas Gainford, Daniel, second son of the late James McFarlane, plasterer, Auchterarder, Perthshire, Scotland, to Priscillia, eldest surviving daughter of James Affleck, Edinburgh.

John Belches of Invermay Major James Stewart of the 13th Regiment, now servant to Mr. John Belches, junior, of Invermay

The Baronet of the grandtully estate at the time was was John Archibald Drummond-Stewart (18th of Grandtully , 6th Baronet) who was succeeded by his brother Capt Sir William Drummon Stewart of Grandtully and Murthly, They also held the lands of Grandtully, Kyltidich and Aberfaldie.
