The name Tomlinson dates back to the Anglo-Saxon tribes of Britain. It is a patronymic surname which comes from the personal name Thomas - ie son of Tomlin or son of Little Tom.

it has been identified that our branch of the Tomlinson family originates in Herefordshire. The earliest known ancestor is Esther Tomlinson. Her great granddaughter Jane Bygrave emigrated to Australia from Jamaica in 1853.
