John Bashford 1760 - 1821

John Bashford was born in 1760 to Josiah Bashford and Sarah Boniface. He was baptised - along with twin brother Josiah - on 21 September 1760 at New Shoreham in Sussex.  

John married Jane Baker on May 13 1788 at Broadwater by Worthing, Sussex. Jane was living in Broadwater at the time of her marriage, but we have not identified her parentage at this point. John is noted as being of West Tarring, and the marriage is witnessed by Elizabeth Paine and Christian Piper

John and Jane had at least five children between 1789 and 1799 :

  • William Bashford Born 1789. Died ?. 
  • Frances Bashford Born 1791. Died 1861.  Married Richard Paine 1813
  • John Bashford Born 1793. Died ?. Married Sarah 
  • James Bashford Born 1796. Died 1827. Married Eliza Greenyer 1816
  • Thomas Bashford Born 1799. Died 1799.

Jane died in late April 1818 and is buried on 23 April 1818. John survives her by 3 years dying in early February 1821 and is buried at Broadwater Churchyard on 15 February 1821. 

In terms of their children

  • William Bashford 
    • Enlists to fight in the Napoleonic wars in April 1813 and serves 1 year 173 days as a Private with the 3rd Regiment of Guards under Lt Col Hamilton before being discharged on September 20 1814 after contracting illness in Spain. On his discharge record he is not as 5' 9½" tall with brown hair, grey eyes and a fair complexion

    • There are no records of William after his discharge from the military in 1814
  • Frances Bashford
    • Marries Richard Paine on Jan 13 1813 at St Marys Broadwater by Worthing
    • She dies in 1861
  • John Bashford
    • Marries Ann Blackford on Oct 13 1825 at Saint Martin, Birmingham, Warwickshire. They have a son John
    • John dies in Aug 1859 and is buried in Knowle, Warwickshire on 22 Aug 1859
  • James Bashford
    • James marries Eliza Greenyer on July 28 1816. Elizabeth was pregnant at the time as their first child was baptised 3 months after the marriage. They have five children
      • Elizabeth born in 1816 baptised on 29 September 1816, she married Henry Mates on 1 Oct 1839 and they have 2 children - Emma, Elizabeth. She dies in 1848
      • William born in 1818, baptised on 6 September 1818 and dies of apoplexy in 1831
      • Frances born in 1821, baptised on 27 January 1822, marries Stephen Slaughter on 8 July 1848. They have 4 children - Edwin, Frances, William, Emma Jane.She dies in 1904.
      • Jane born in 1823, baptised on 23 September 1823, marries George Atkinson on 27 July 1858.
      • James born in 1825, baptised on 7 August 1825, marries Martha Frances Slaughter on 29 November 1851. They have 5 children James, Elizabeth, Peter, William, Sarah Frances. He dies in 1898
    • The 1821 census see a James Bashford living in Broadwater by Worthing, there are 4 people in the household (2 males and 2 females) and the family is involved in Agriculture
    • James dies young in April 1827 and is buried at St Mary's Broadwater by Worthing on 1 May 1827
    • In 1831 Eliza has a child out of wedlock - Eliza 1831 - there is no father identified on the baptism and she is baptised as a Bashford. Not long after Eliza's baptism eldest son William dies of an apoplexy after falling off a cart. He apparently died on the spot.
    • 1841 census sees the family living at Broadwater St, Broadwater by Worthing. There are 3 children living at home - Jane, James and Eliza - and Eliza has boarder / lover Isaac Paskins living with her. Her daughter Frances is working as a female servant working for Clarissa and Jane Trigg and living on High St, Broadwater.
    • 1844 Eliza remarries Isaac Paskins
  • Thomas Bashford
    • Dies in Infancy
