Robert Jessup (~1720 - 1808)
Robert Jessop was born sometime around 1720. We have been unable to identify parents for Robert, or any primary records before his marriage.
He married Martha Smith on 26 Dec 1745 at Heveningham, Suffolk. Martha was born to Charles Smith and Martha Sharman in Chediston, Suffolk - most likely in 1727. She was baptised on 1 Dec 1728.
It appears that Robert and Martha spent the first few years after their marriage in Cookley before moving to Huntingfield. It has been difficult to find baptismal records for their children, however we have identified the following:
- Mary Jessup Born 1746.
- Ann Jessup Born 1747 Died 1748
- Ann Jessup Born ? Died 1754
- William Jessup Born abt 1752 ; . Died 1805. Married Elizabeth Nunn ; Died 1805 1777 - TO BE CONFIRMED
- Robert Jessup Born 1754. Died ?. Married Elizabeth Riches 1771 - TO BE CONFIRMED
- Thomas Jessup Born abt 1758 -
- Martha Jessup Born abt 1758 -
- Samuel Jessup Born abt 1759 ; Married . Died 1817. Married Elizabeth Calver ; Died 1817
- John Jessup Born 1759 -
- Charles Jessop Born abt 1761 ; . Died 1843. Married Elizabeth Bedingfield ; Died 1843
- Joseph Jessup Born 1763 ; Died 1763
- Joseph Jessup Born 1766 ; Died 1766
- James Jessup Born 1769 ; Married ? ; Died ?
We have found records for most of these children - except William and Robert. Williams inclusion is based upon the naming patterns of his children, and Robert because there is again based on naming patterns it does seem that the family should have a son name Robert. We have been unable to confirm the birth order, as several baptism records for this family have multiple baptisms, however there does appear to be a gap between 1747 and 1858 and there is a marriage for a Robert Jessup in Bramfield in 1771 to Elizabeth Riches. On the marriage record his fathers name is captured as Robert and his year of birth as 1754 (age at marriage is 17) which makes him a very likely candidate
It appears that the family were Non-Conformist. It also appears that the family dispersed through the area, with William staying in Huntinfield Huntingfield ; Samuel ending up in Ubbeston ; Charles living in Cratfield.
