Charles Jessup 1818 - 1877

Charles Charles Jessop was born in Cratfield in 1818, the second child and eldest son of John Jessop and Lucy Mouser. He was baptised in Cratfield on 19 Sept 1819

In Feb 1836 when

John

Charles was 18 his mother died in child birth. It is highly like that by this time he was out of home and working as an agricultural labourer - most likely in Metfield, because it is here on 18 Oct 1836 Charles marries Lucy Clutterham. Lucy was the daughter of ? and ?.

It appears that the family lived in Metfield immediately after their marriage because it is here the first of their 6 children were born:

  • John Jessup Born 1838
  • Sarah Ann Jessup Born 1839
  • Emma Jessup Born 1842
  • Charles Jessup Born 1844
  • William Jessup Born 1846
  • Emily Jessup Born 1848

It is unknown whether the young family considered relocating to Australia with Charles father John and his new wife in later 1837. Lucy would have been heavily pregnant at this time and this may have been the key reason the family stayed behind.

The family moved from Metfield to Gorleston some time between March 1838 and September 1839, as their second child was registered there. The 1841 census finds the family living at High Road, Gorleston where he is working as an Agricultural Labourer.

Some time in the next 10 years Charles joined the Merchant Marine, most likely in 1845. The 1851 census finds him living at Pier Cliff in Gorleston.

In 1853 his wife Lucy dies, and it is likely that it is at this time that he leaves the merchant marine to focus on raising the children.

Charles does not stay single long, marrying Anna Marie Walker in Lowestoft, Suffolk on 30 Jan 1854 - less than 10 months after his wifes death. Charles and Anna Marie (who is recorded as Marie on the childrens baptismal certificates and census) had 7 children

  • Edward Jessup Born 1855
  • Hannah Jessup Born 1858
  • Mary Ann Jessup Born 1859
  • Herbert Jessup Born 1863
  • Eva Jessup Born 1866
  • Minnie Jessup Born 1870
  • Ernest Jessup Born 1872

Both the 1861 and 1871 census find the family living at 30 Crown St Lowestoft where Charles is working as a Brewery Labourer.

Charles dies in early July 1877 where he was buried at St Margarets Church in Lowestoft on 5 Jul 1877.
