My Kirkman Family


The name Kirkman is of Old Norman origin and is occupation. It is derived from the term kirkja - or church - and comes from when one of the family worked as a churchwarden ; - the custodian of a church. Further research revealed that the name is derived from the Old Norman word kirkja, which meant church, and man, the Old English word for man. Historically 

it has been identified that our branch of the Kirkman family originates from the the Hayes family originated from the Radcliffe area of Lancashire. The earliest known ancestor is Zachariah Kirkman. His daughter Sarah Kirkman married James Heyes and their great grand daughter Mary Hayes emigrates to Australia with her husband David Yates in 1883. .
