Eva Mary Yates 1895 - 1967

Eva Mary Yates (1895 - 1967)

Eva Mary Yates was born at Railway St, Booval on 4 November 1895. She was the ninth child and youngest daughter of David Yates and Mary Hayes. 

Eva went to Newton State School, and showed domestic skills early. In 1906 where she won first place in the Juvenile category at the Ipswich Show for her sewing ability (Best Muslin Sampler). After finishing school she became a tailoress - as noted in the 1917 Electoral Role.

On 4 September 1918 she married James Bashford Bain in Ipswich. James was the son of James Cairns Bain and Sarah Ann Bashford

James and Eva produced 3 children, 1 son and 2 daughters:

• James Edward Bain born 7 Aug 1919 ; married Joyce Austin
• Doreen Bain born 21 May 1921 married Douglas James Hardie
• Mary Bain b. married Charles Schieffelbein

Eva was religious and heavily involved in the East Ipswich Methodist Church.

During the depression years Eva went back to working as a tailoress supplementing the families income, allowing all of the children to have a good education - initially attending Ipswich Central School moving on to grammar school.

Eva was a demanding woman with high expectations of her children and the girls in particular were raised with all the expected skills of young ladies - dancing, sewing and playing an instrument. The family were comfortable, and by the time the children were in their early teens the family were living in Ipswich in a medium sized timber house on a 66 foot frontage block, and taking regular family holidays to the beach.

In 1939 the family moved to Prospect Avenue in Sherwood Brisbane, where they lived until Eva died in August 1967, she was 72. After her death James moved in the his daughter Doreen until he passed away
