The family name Lumsden is derived from a place called 'Lumsden' in the parish of Coldingham, Berwickshire. The place name derives from the Olde English pre 7th century 'lumm' meaning a pool, plus 'denu' a valley. The last name is first recorded in the mid 12th century in an early Calendar of Documents relating to Scotland, reference is made to an Adam de Lummesdene of Berwickshire who rendered homage in 1296. There are a number of spelling variations, including Lumsden, Lumsdaine, and Lumsdon.
Current research identifies our line of the Lumsden family originates in Nenthorn, Berwick in the mid 1700s. The earliest confirmed ancestor of our Lumsden family is Robert Lumsden. His granddaughter Mary Brown Lumsden married Joseph Kitching. Their son Joseph Charles Kitching emigrates to Australia in the 1880s.
