My Kitching Family

My Kitching Family

The Kitchings are an old Yorkshire Family, whose name was originally spelt Kitchin. First evidence of the Kitching family is found in the north of England in the 13th century, (for more information check out the Kitching Name Meaning).

There have been alot of challenges in researching this family with many false starts and wrong turns. Other researchers sharing DNA have attributed this family line one of two ways

  • the Kitching line of OLD MALTON - based on the birth of Joseph in 1818 - John Kitching and Martha Hindson
  • the Kitching line of GUISBOROUGH - based on birth of Robert in mid 1790 - Peter Kitchin and Jane Clark

Deeper interrogation of both line found significant points of contention. So I started against from scratch, staying the wider Leeds area including - Hunslet, Holbeck, Farnley, Bramley, Armley, Cottingley, Stanningley, Burley, Headingley, Kirkstall, Allerton

Research is still ongoing, but there are strong indication that our Kitchings are actually descendant of a family heavily involved in the "personal care" - for want of a better word - industry, including cloth making, hairdressing, shoemaker etc. As part of this I expanded my scope to include the following names - Kitching ; Kitchen ; Kitson ; Kitchingman.

We can confidently say that our line of the Kitching family as originating Leeds or the surrounding regions in the West Riding of Yorkshire the early 1700s.

The earliest confirmed ancestor of our Kitching family is Joseph Kitching (1818) we had historically assumed that it was the Robert Kitching who was living with Joseph in 1841, however this could as easily been an uncle.  There is limited information about the family prior to Joseph Charles Kitching who emigrated to Australia in the 1880s.

My Kitching ancestry goes back 9 generations and biographies exist for some members as indicated by links
