George Cockburn was born in Longformacus, Berwickshire in 1789. He was the son of James Cockburn and Mary Bookless - also spelt Beuglas -

George married twice, firstly to Mary Kraik in Duns in 1815, and secondly - after Mary’s death - to Mary Kerr in Duns in 1819. These marriages produced the following children

George Cockburn and Mary Kraik had 1 child:

  • Christian Cockburn born 1816

George Cockburn and Mary Kerr had 6 children

  • James Cockburn born 1820 died 1871

  • Agnes Cockburn born 1821 died 1884

  • George Cockburn born 1823

  • Anne Cockburn born 1825 died 1884

  • Ninian Cockburn born 1827 died 1895

  • Mary Cockburn born 1829 died 1892

It is during Georges marriage to Mary Kerr that he appears to have had a relationship with Margaret Spence which produced a daughter, however there is no record or the birth, nor was his parentage recognised through sheriff or kirk records
