George Cockburn was born in Longformacus, Berwickshire in 1789. He was the son of James Cockburn and Mary Bookless - also spelt Beuglas.

George married twice, firstly to Mary Kraik in Duns in 1815, and secondly - after Mary’s death - to Mary Kerr in Duns in 1819. These marriages produced the following children

  • Mary Cockburn born 1829 died 1892

It is during Georges marriage to Mary Kerr that he appears to have had a relationship with Margaret Spence which produced a daughter, however there is no record or the birth, nor was his parentage recognised through sheriff or kirk records
