Historically it has been identified that the Hayes family originated from the Bolton area of Lancashire. 

Current research identifies the progenitor of our line of the Hayes family as being James Heyes. He is first documented on his marriage record in Middleton, Lancashire. It is his great granddaughter Mary Hayes who marries David Yates and emigrates to Australia in 1883
