Margaret Higson (1825 - 1887)

Margaret Higson was born in March 1825. She was second child and second daughter of James Higson and Mary Pendlebury. She was christened on April 3 1825

We know that the family lived in Deane as the 1841 census has Margaret living at home with her parents in Rumworth, Deane and working as a hand loom weaver.

Margaret married John Hayes 1805 - of Ainsworth at the Deane parish church - St Mary the Virgin in Rumworth on 1 October 1848.

Margaret and John moved to Bolton after their marriage and can be found living in Burrden at the time of the 1851 census (where Margaret is still a hand loom weaver). The family was quite mobile of the next 20 odd years:

  • In 1861 they are living at 80 Commission St Great Bolton
  • In 1871 they are living at 35 Back Pump St Great Bolton (and Margaret is noted as a char woman)
  • In 1881 it is not possible to determine where the family was living, because Margaret was recorded as being at the Police Station, Town Hall, Great Bolton

Margaret and John had five (5) children:
