The children baptismal records indicate that up to about 1830 Josias is working as thatcher, and living in Cokeham. It is with Mary Ann's birth in 1833 that he is first recorded as a gardener. The census records indicate that over the next 40 years the family became increasingly prosperous :
- 1841 Census - Josias is recorded as a Gardener and the family is recorded as living on Sompting St, Sompting
- 1851 Census - Josias is recorded as a Gardener of 4 acres employing 2 men and the family is still living Sompting St, Sompting
- 1861 Census - Josias is recorded as a market gardener employing 3 people and the family was living at 20 High St West Tarring
- 1871 Census - Josias is recorded as a market gardener of 15 acres employing 7 men and 3 boys. and the family is living at 24 South St, West Tarring
Josias died from emphysemia and bronchitis on 24 May 1880 in West Tarring, Sussex, he was buried int he St Andrews Churchyard at West Tarring on 28 May 1880.
It appears that after his death the family business was passed on to his son Charles and potentially his daughter Eleanor who are recorded in the 1881 census as follows
- Charles Bashford - High St, West Tarring - Market Gardener of 25 acres - employing 8 men and 3 boys
- Eleanor Bashford - 111 North Ste, West Tarring - Market Gardener of 6 ½ acres employing 7 men and 2 boysÂ

They had 7 children - Samuel Gabrial, Jane Gilliam, Henry Gilliam, Martha, Elizabeth, Fanny, Edward May. The family were living in Lancing in 1851 before moving to Brighton where they were living in 1861 and 1871. We have no confirmed date of death for Samuel, and we can find no record of him after the 1871 census. There is a Samuel Bashford who is convicted of Larceny in 1881 and sentenced to 12 months hard labour, but we havent confirmed that this is our Samuel. There is also a Samuel Bashford in the Electoral Rolls for Brighton from 1883 thru to 1905, but Samuel does not appear in the Census for that period.
