Samuel Jessop 1759 - 1817
Samuel Jessop (~1759 - 1817)
Samuel Jessop was born to Robert Jessop and Martha Smith in the Huntingfield, Suffolk. Samuel was born some time between 1858 and 1862 when he was baptised with his brothers John and Charles on 5 Feb 1762 at Huntingfield, Suffolk.
He married Elizabeth Calver on 15 Dec 1778 at All Saints, Laxfield in Suffolk. We have been unable to identify baptism information or parentage of Elizabeth, but census records put here year of birth at about 1753 - this could make her the Elizabeth Calver born to John and Elizabeth Calver in Framlingham in 1853
Samuel and Elizabeth lived in Ubbeston Suffolk, close by to Samuels brother Charles. They had at 7 children including:
- Henry Jessup Born 1779. Died ?
- Elizabeth Jessup Born 1781. Died ?. Married
- Ann Jessup Born 1783. Died ?. Married
- Hannah Jessup Born 1786
- Martha Jessup Born 1787.
- Ermelia Jessup Born 1790.
- Lois Jessup Born 1792. Died ?. Married William Abraham 1822 and Samuel Fayers 1840
Samuel died in April 1817 in Ubbeston. He was bured on 27 April 1817 at St Peters, Ubbeston. On his burial record he is noted as being 58.
The 1841 Census sees Elizabeth living with her daughter Ermelia in Ubbeston.
Elizabeth dies in August 1842 and was buried on 4 August 1842 at St Peters, Ubbeston. On her burial records she is noted as being 90.
In terms of the children:
- We are unable to find any trace of Henry Jessup
- For Ann Jessop, we have the following potential records which are yet to be confirmed
- Ann Jessup giving birth to Hannah Haward Jessup in 1814 in Huntingfield and Maria Jessup in 1820 at Carlton
- 1841 Census - Ann Jessup living with her daughter Maria (19) in Walpole in the 1841 census, her age is noted as 50, however this is likely a rounding error.
- 1861 Census - Ann Jessup is recorded as a 75 year old former cook lodging with Sarah Aldous at Pound St in Halesworth.
- An Ann Jessup had a death recorded in the Blything Hundred Death Register in 1866 and the Burial records note that she was buried at Halesworth Cemetary on 19 March 1866 - at age 81.
- There is a Martha Jessup noted as dying in Ubbeston in January 1840. She is buried at St Peters Ubbeston on 12 January 1840 - this is likely our Martha, although age at burial puts her year of birth as 1783, rather than 1787.
- No evidence can be found of Ermelia after the 1841 census, however there is a death registration for an Amelia Jessup registered in Blything in 2nd Quarter 1842 that is a likely candidate.
- Lois - the youngest daughter - moves to London. Upon moving to London she takes on the name Lorahamah. In 1822 she marries William Abraham at Clerkenwell in 1822. The couple have 3 children before William dies and Lois marries again in 1840 to Samuel Fayers - a milkman - where they live at Tyrel Place in Bethnal Green through to at least 1861. Interesting Lois is not home at the time of the 1841 census, but her youngest daughter Ann (11) is living with them.
