Joseph Hardie (1714 - ?)
Joseph Hardie was born in 1714 in Clackmannan, Clackmannan, the eight child of John Hardie & Isobell Ferguson. He was christened on 23 November 1714. He married Marion Messar on 26 October 1750 in Clackmannan Parish, Clackmannan.
Marion was born in 1725 - the sixth child and third daughter of William Messar/Mercer (b. abt 1682 - ?) and Christian Rae/Roe (b. abt 1685 - ?). She was christened on 30 October 1725. Her last name was also spelt Mercer or Mesar. William & Christian Messar also resided in Clackmannan, where they produced 7 children between 1711 and 1728 (John, Francis, Jean, James, Janet, Margaret, Robert, Marion and Mary).
Joseph and Marion resided in Clackmannan for most of their lives. They produced had at least nine children between 1751 and 1770:
- Isobel Hardie. Born 1751. Baptised 10 October 1751. Married Andrew Murray on 18 Dec 1774 in Dollar, Clackmannan.
- Christian Hardie. Born 1753. Baptised 22 July 1753.
- Jean Hardie. Born 1755. Baptised 27 July 1755.
- Grizal Hardie. Born 1758. Baptised 15 June 1758. Married John Marshall on 4 April 1779 in Dollar, Clackmannan
- John Hardie. Born 1760. Baptised 24 Jun 1760. Died 1833
- Francis Hardie. Born 1762. Baptised 21 June 1762. Married Janet Elliot on 26 Nov 1797 in Langholm, Dumfries
- Joseph Hardie. Born 1764. Baptised 5 August 1764. Married Margaret Saltoun on 26 June 1795 in Haddington, East Lothian
- William Hardie. Born 1766. Baptised 13 July 1766. Married Helen Ramsay on 3 June 1781 in Clackmannan, Clackmannan
- James Hardie. Born 1770. Baptised 21 January 1770. Died some time before 1817.
- Margaret Hardie. Born abt 1772. This child is unconfirmed
Joseph and Marion appear to have been relocated to Saline, Fife in their later years, either that or John moved the bodies there for burial. They are both buried in the Old Church Cemetery, Saline, Fifeshire (pronounced "Sahl-un") under a stone marked simply "J H" and "M M". They were probably brought there for burial by their son, John Hardie.
