Isabel Hardie was born at "Broomie Knowe" in Saline Fife in 1788, where she was baptised on 26 October 1788. She was the second child and eldest daughter of John Hardie and Isabella Cousin.

Some time before 1813 she was living in Tollbooth Church Parish in Edinburgh. It was here on 12 March 1813 she married John Sands. John is the fourth child and eldest son of David Sands and Margaret Rutherford. He was born in Orwell, Kinross in 1780, where he was christened on 2 Apr 1780.

Their marriage certificate describes them as “Mr. John Sands, Wright [builder], South Leith Parish, and Miss Isabel Hardie, Tolbooth Church Parish, Daughter of Mr. John Hardie, Parish of Saline;” and further says that “She has resided in Edinburgh upwards of six weeks preceding the proclamation of Banns...”
